Focus Questions: “Creating a Connected Community” by Dorice Ramsey

- How did Ramsey Teacher create distrust in her when she was a kid? (pull evidence from source materials to support answer):
her teacher didn't stop a clearly racist and uncomfortable situation, Ramsey stopped singing when she heard the lyrics, but her teacher didn't stop the song even though she should have. the teacher didn't notice the impact it had on Ramsey. her teacher also never really paid attention to her inside of class too.

- What should Ramsey teacher done differently?(pull evidence from source materials to support answer):
the teacher could have put more effort to pay attention and invite Ramsey more into he community because Ramsey felt like an outsider

- What does the term “other” mean in this instance and how does it relate to negative stereotypes? (pull evidence from source materials to support answer):
people who don't understand why being an outsider and being ignored hurts, when they ignore or deny the negative stereotype nothing happens to fix these stereotypes, people stay ignorant and hurt others because of this.

- What does the term Implicit bias mean? (pull evidence from source materials to support answer):
the unconscious attributions of quality to a particular group influenced by our experiences,
a negative attitude, of which one is not consciously aware, against a specific social group.

- How can we check our implicit bias? (pull evidence from source materials to support answer):
see another persons perspective, and notice when you have these negative thoughts

Focus Questions: “Confidence in Community” by Johana Muriel Grajales

- After reading the article name THREE things the community did for Grajales as she first started at her new college? (pull evidence from source materials to support answer):
felt warm and welcoming, it felt like a home to her because of this. it created a safe space for her, because everyone was close and she felt she could be 100% herself. it was so welcoming. everyone was supportive, they were always there to help especially in times of struggle.

- What does she say about her confidence and how it's been affected by her community? (pull evidence from source materials to support answer):
If you're confident then you can connect with your community. she was confident in herself and that helped her connect with the community better

Opinion Based Questions: Your Experiences/Thoughts after the reading/video/podcast

- How can a community that has caused harm repair?
a community can repair if people learn to understand everyone in the community so no one feels like an outsider. from the video Ramsey said to see from the others perspective and check for implicit biases.

- After the reading Do you believe that people absolutely need community to feel confident? Or can confidence be achieved without support?
i believe that everyone in the community does need confidence, and if they don't have much confidence to help that person gain it, people need support to gain confidence. if your community is cold and unwelcoming you will have a harder time gaining confidence because no one is there to help you

Focus Questions: “Creating a Connected Community” by Dorice Ramsey

- How did Ramesy Teacher create distrust in her when she was a kid? her teacher never stoped a racist and very uncomfortable situation, Ramsey didn't continue singing when she heard the lyrics, but her teacher refused to stop the song when she clearly should have. the teacher didn't recognize the impact it had on Ramsey.

- What should Ramsey teacher done differently? Ramsey felt left out or almost like she was an outsider and her teacher could have put in the effort to make sure she didn't feel that way.

- What does the term “other” mean in this instance and how does it relate to negative stereotypes); other is used to describe someone who does not fit in, they are known as the outsider or like the friend that gets pushed to the grass instead of the side walk kind of situation. this relates to negative stereotypes because I think sometimes people thing of the other as being weird or something is wrong with them but in reality they are just misunderstood.

- What is the term Implicit bias mean? It means having a bias toward people that are ''different'' including gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality etc. this reminds me of intersectionality.

- How can we check our implicit bias? Reflect on your biases and be proactive in identifying the negative stereotypes you have about others.

Focus Questions: “Confidence in Community” by Johana Muriel Grajales

- After reading the article name THREE things the community did for Grajales as she first started at her new college? : it felt very comforting and welcoming to her which created a sense of home. everyone was very close like it was a little family and she had hope that she could be a part of this family too. she felt like she could fully be herself and that these people would help her in her times of struggle.

- What does she say about her confidence and how it's been affected by her community? if you are confident in who you are/ where you come from then others van real to you or your background and therefor create that community feeling space.

Opinion Based Questions: Your Experiences/Thoughts after the reading/video/podcast

- How can a community that has caused harm repair? I think that a community that has caused harm can repair the damage they have done by showing up and making u for the damage they have done. ad from there they can just hope that everyone will start trusting again and start creating back that community

- After the reading Do you believe that people absolutely need community to feel confident? Or can confidence be achieved without support? I think that anyone can become confident, because to me its more of a mindset. bu I also believe that with the help of a community and people tat you can relate to t makes confidence a lot easier because you have somewhere you being which then automatically takes away the insecurity of being alone. all in all a community can be very helpful and supportive in ones confidence journey

Week 4: Confidence in Community Empty Re: Week 4: Confidence in Community

Sun Feb 11, 2024 8:31 am
Focus Questions Doris Ramsey:
How did Ramesy's Teacher create distrust in her when she was a kid: Her teacher didn't prevent or stop a very racist and inappropriate situation, she didn't stop the song when she should have and didn't acknowledge or realize the impact it had on Ramsey.

What should Ramsey's teacher done differently: Ramsey felt very much on the outside and her teacher didn't do anything to try to stop that or make her feel more welcomed, in fact she made it so that she was more on the outside. Her teacher could've made her more of a part of the community and acknowledged her actions and how hurtful they were.

What does the term “other” mean in this instance and how does it relate to negative stereotypes: "Other" in this instance means isolated and made to feel different because of her identity. This relates to negative stereotypes because if you are othered you are made to feel lesser than. Being othered can just be interpreted as saying you're not the 'ideal' and that means you're wrong. This narrative plays into a lot of negative stereotypes.

What does the term Implicit bias mean: implicit bias means the unconscious judgement of a group that's comes from and is influenced by our experiences.

How can we check our implicit bias: We can check our implicit bias by trying to see perspectives other than our own and checking ourselves about why we think that way and what we can do to widen our own opinions.

Focus Questions Muriel Grajales:
Three Things the college did for her: The college created a safe and welcoming space for Muriel, this made her feel like she could be comfortably herself. Another thing they did for her was have the most supporting people around her which made the school so comforting. The last thing they did was give her a sort of family that made the times of struggle a bit easier.

What does she say about her confidence and how it's been affected by her community: She talks about how being confident plays a lot into connecting with a community. If you are confident in who you are people will be drawn to you and you'll find the real friends that will support you through everything.

Opinion Based Questions:
How can a community that has caused harm repair: I think a really important piece of repairing when a community has caused harm is listening to the people who have been harmed. You wont get anywhere if you can't listen and try to go from there. It shows that the community cares enough and wants to follow through with repairing.

After the reading Do you believe that people absolutely need community to feel confident: I've always thought that having a community really helps to feel confident. You can be confident without it but I think the most confident people have really good support from their community can build more confidence than they had before. I think it really helps confidence to know that there's always people to count on and support as well as be supported by.

Opinion Based Questions: Your Experiences/Thoughts after the reading/video/podcast

- How can a community that has caused harm repair?
A community that has caused harm can repair by acknowledging their harm, finding solutions, and preventing from future despair.

- After the reading Do you believe that people absolutely need community to feel confident? Or can confidence be achieved without support?
I feel as though confidence can definitely be achieved without support because we live in a evil world which will stay evil, but trusting yourself to make decisions your abilities are capable of and being able to guide through a world that isn't as accepting is possible. Community is a tool, you can build community and flourish your confidence from there, but you can also learn alone and build confidence from experience; there's always an option.

Three Big Ideas
The majority of Americans do not feel that police are adequately held accountable for their actions, treat racial groups equally, or use the right amount of force.

This lack of trust undermines the legitimacy of law enforcement.

Trust in law enforcement is essential for the belief in the legitimacy of law enforcement, or feeling an obligation to obey the law and defer to decisions made by legal authorities.
Two Interesting Facts
Trust can be defined as the "belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective."
High levels of trust promote healthy interactions.
One Question
What are small things we can do every day to help fix the relationship between our community and law enforcement?
